The Zone diet is based on a book written by Dr. Barry Sears. The diet focuses on balancing the amount of proteins, fats, and carbs eaten, instead of counting calories. It can be used for Atkins diet and the South Beach diet mainly because it emphasizes eating 40 percent carbs, 30 percent proteins, and 30 percent fats (40/30/30). The diet claims this combination will balance hormones and create the body you want.
Dr. Sears states, "The American public is overweight due to a high intake of carbohydrates, and that this style of eating causes an overproduction of insulin. The solution is to eat a lower carb, higher protein, and moderate fat diet to balance these hormones within the preferred zone."
The diet works because it is low in calories and restricts high-fat and high-carb foods such as starches, grains, and pastas. The Zone diet also has prepackaged foods that may be purchased - as a way to make sure your meals are properly balanced, as well as providing convenience.
When your body is balanced, it becomes more efficient and will not store excess calories as fat. Scientific studies have shown that the Zone diet can produce significant weight loss in a reasonable period of time.
