Cabbage Soup Diet

Cabbage Soup Diet

The Cabbage soup diet is a trendy that is built around consumption of an very low-calorie cabbage soup. The origins of the cabbage soup diet are not known. It first gained popularity in the 1980s.

The intent is to lose 10 pounds in a week. Though nutritional experts who have researched the diet claim it is unrealistic to lose that much fat within a week. When you lose more than 1-2 pounds a week, much of the weight lost is water. Many of the cabbage soup recipes are very high in sodium and contain very little protein.

The cabbage soup diet is called by many titles, including the "sacred heart diet", "military cabbage soup", "TJ Miracle Soup Diet", and many more. As a general rule, most variations of the diet emphasize that the dieter can consume as much cabbage soup as he/she wants.

The more popular forms of the soup recipe have been discounted as being sort of bland, though there are now spicy versions of the recipe available. Another common side effect is flatulence. Many complain that the soup is not filling enough to sustain them through the day. The more recent, healthier versions of the cabbage soup diet add protein and lower sodium to overcome some of the previous shortcomings.

Sample dieting program

Day 1: Cabbage soup, plus fruit (except bananas). Drink unsweetened tea, black coffee, cranberry juice and water.

Day 2: Cabbage soup, in addition to other vegetables (raw, boiled or steamed), avoid dry beans, peas and corn. For dinner, eat a baked potato with butter.

Day 3: Cabbage soup, in addition to other fruits and vegetables.

Day 4: Cabbage soup, plus up to 8 bananas and fat-free milk.

Day 5: Cabbage soup, in addition to up to 6 tomatoes and up to 450 grams of meat or fish.

Day 6: Cabbage soup, plus meat and vegetables.

Day 7: Cabbage soup, in addition to brown rice, pure fruit juice and vegetables.

6 large green onions
2 green peppers
1 or 2 cans of tomatoes (diced or whole)
3 Carrots
1 Container (10 oz. or so) Mushrooms
1 bunch of celery
Half a head of cabbage
1 package Lipton soup combination
1 or 2 cubes of bouillon (optional)
1 48oz can V8 juice (optional)

Season to taste with salt, pepper, parsley, curry, garlic powder, etc.

Slice green onions, put in a pot and start cooking. Cut green pepper stem end off and cut in half, take the seeds and membrane out. Cut the green-pepper into bite size pieces and add. Cut cabbage into small slices, add to pot. Clean carrots, cut into bite size slices, and add to pot. Slice and add mushrooms. If you would like a spicy soup, and add a small amount of curry or cayenne pepper. You may use beef or chicken bouillon cubes for seasonings. These have all the salt and flavors you will need. Use about 12 cups of water, cover and heat on low. Let soup cook approximately two hours. Season to taste.
